Fresh from his much deserved victory at the British Wildlife Photography Awards, Marc Humphrey put on a workshop photographing Water Voles.

I got there quite early so spent a bit of time with some waterfowl in a reservoir a short drive from the vole location.

The Voles were a bit shy to start with - they don't enjoy cold mornings. And fair enough who does. Once the sun was a little higher, the voles came out to play.

Their numbers are a little down on last year following heavy rainfall earlier this winter. Voles are acutely vulnerable to changes in water level so the rain wasnt ideal. It's not unusual for voles numbers to fluctuate wildly though, its just part of natures cycles.

Anyway, Marc was great and knew exactly where to look. On this occasion the Voles were a little shy and stuck mainly to the reeds. Marc had an uncanny knack for finding the best available angle. I'd never have got the shots I did without his help - thanks Marc!

He's got a very easy manner too, I'd very much recommend his workshops and tours. You can find them here.
