Description

A striking black and white bird with a long tail that constantly bobs up and down. The British type has darker feathers than those found on the continent, with males showing bold black backs and caps that stand out against their white faces and undersides. When flying, you can see a deep wave-like pattern and white feathers on the outer part of the tail. This bird is often seen quickly running across lawns and car parks chasing insects, and it frequently makes a sharp, chattering call. This bird lives all year round across the British Isles. It can be found in open areas such as city gardens, pavements, farmyards, riverbanks, and coastal spots. It is especially common near where people live, as short grass and hard surfaces make good places to find food. In winter, these birds often gather together to sleep in towns, choosing trees or buildings to settle on at dusk.
