Kittiwake
Rissa tridactyla
Description
The Black-legged Kittiwake is a medium-sized sea gull known for its tidy look. It has solid black wingtips without white spots, a yellow bill, and dark eyes. Adult birds have pale grey backs and clean white undersides. Young birds show a clear black 'W' shape across their wings and a black ring around their neck. Unlike most gulls, kittiwakes have fully webbed back toes, which helps them live out at sea. This bird breeds in groups on steep coastal cliffs around Britain and Ireland, especially in Scotland and northeast England. They build neat mud nests on small ledges. After the breeding season, kittiwakes spread out across the North Atlantic and seldom come inland. Their name comes from their distinctive 'kitti-waak' call, which is often heard at their breeding sites. They catch food by dipping on the water’s surface and diving for small fish and sea creatures.
