Oystercatchers are among the boldest-looking waders we get, all strong contrast, bright bill, and more presence than their size ought to allow. This photograph was made in Lancashire on an overcast June morning, which gave the scene a quieter feel than the bird itself usually suggests. They are instantly recognisable, but still rewarding to photograph well because the shape is so clean and graphic. Even in soft light, they have no trouble standing out.
