Description

The Iberian Magpie is a striking bird found only on the Iberian Peninsula, mainly in central and southwestern Spain and Portugal. It is smaller and more delicate than the Common Magpie. It has a distinctive blue-grey top of the head and back of the neck, a black throat and neck ring, and pale greyish-brown underparts. Its wings and long tail are a bright sky blue, especially noticeable when it is flying. This bird lives in open woodlands with cork oak and holm oak trees. It is often seen in small, noisy groups moving through the tree canopy with great agility. Unlike its widespread relative found in Asia, the Iberian Magpie has a very limited range. This makes it a popular bird for people who come to the area to watch wildlife. Its constant chattering and social nature are well known, with groups staying in contact by calling to each other while they search for insects, fruits, and acorns.
