Description

The Pied Avocet is a striking wading bird with black and white feathers and a distinctive upturned bill. This graceful bird is about 43 centimetres long and has long, blue-grey legs. Its curved bill moves side to side through shallow water to catch small creatures like insects and shellfish. It lives in coastal lagoons, estuaries, and shallow salty lakes. The Pied Avocet breeds in Britain and mainland Europe. In winter, many move to areas around the Mediterranean and into Africa. Birds that breed in Britain usually stay nearby or only travel short distances to milder coastal spots. The bird prefers mudflats and salty pools with little plant growth. It often feeds in small groups. Its unique look and feeding style make it easy to recognise. It also has a loud, clear call that carries across wetland areas.
