Blackbird
Turdus merula
Description
The Blackbird is a common thrush that looks different between males and females. Males are completely black with a bright orange-yellow beak and a ring around their eyes. Females are dark brown with a streaked throat and a duller beak. Both males and females stand upright when they search for food on the ground. The Blackbird is found all over the UK and most of Europe, reaching as far as Asia. It lives year-round in Britain, but birds from northern Europe fly south in winter, which increases the number of Blackbirds in the UK during that time. This bird is very adaptable and can be found in woodland edges, hedgerows, parks, and gardens. It prefers places with fallen leaves and short grass where it can look for small creatures by probing and hopping around. Male Blackbirds sing a rich and pleasant song from high spots, especially on spring evenings.
