Thrushes
family Turdidae
The thrush family consists of medium-sized songbirds known for standing upright, having fairly long legs, and strong, straight beaks. Most young birds have spotted or speckled feathers on their chest, and many keep these markings as adults. These birds mostly feed on the ground, often seen hopping across lawns and forest floors looking for insects and berries. Thrushes live in a variety of places all over the world, except Antarctica and some remote islands. They can be found in dense woods, open moorland, and city gardens. This family includes well-known British birds like blackbirds, song thrushes, and redwings, as well as more unusual types such as solitaires and rock thrushes found in other parts of the world. Many thrushes are skilled singers, creating beautiful and often complicated songs. Birds from northern areas often migrate, while those in tropical regions usually stay in one place.
