Typical Shrikes
genus Lanius
Typical shrikes are medium-sized birds that hunt other animals. They have hooked bills similar to birds of prey and are known for their bold hunting style. They have striking feather colours, usually grey, black, reddish-brown, and white, often with a distinctive black mask on their face. They hunt from visible perches, catching large insects, small mammals, and birds. They are famous for impaling their prey on thorns or barbed wire to store food for later. The shrike species in this group live across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. They are found in open or partly open areas like scrubland, hedgerows, and grasslands. Some species migrate, with those in northern regions moving south during winter. Their flight is usually a wave-like pattern and direct, often showing white patches on their wings. Male and female shrikes look different in some species, with males usually having brighter and more noticeable feather patterns than females.
