Old World Flycatchers and Chats
family Muscicapidae
The Muscicapidae comprise a diverse family of small to medium-sized passerines found across Europe, Africa, and Asia, with several species breeding in or migrating through Britain. Members typically exhibit upright perching postures and many share the characteristic behaviour of sallying from exposed perches to catch flying insects, though the family also includes ground-feeding chats and robins. Plumage varies considerably from the subdued browns and greys of typical flycatchers to the striking black, white, and orange patterns of chats and redstarts. Most species show relatively slender bills adapted for insectivory, though dietary habits span the family from aerial hawking to ground gleaning. The family occupies diverse habitats including woodlands, scrubland, moorland, and gardens. Many northern species are long-distance migrants, whilst tropical members remain largely sedentary.
