Parrots

order Psittaciformes

1species1photos

Parrots are easily recognised birds with strongly curved, hooked beaks and feet that have two toes pointing forward and two pointing backward. There are about 400 different types of parrots worldwide, ranging from small budgerigars to large macaws. Most have bright feathers in greens, reds, blues, and yellows, although some have duller colours. They mainly live in tropical and subtropical areas of the Southern Hemisphere, including rainforests, woodlands, savannahs, and sometimes dry regions. Parrots are not native to Europe, but some wild populations of ring-necked parakeets have established themselves in parts of Britain. Parrots are known for being very intelligent, having complex social lives, and impressive vocal skills. Many species can copy sounds they hear. Most parrots eat plants, including seeds, fruits, nuts, and flowers, using their strong beaks and agile tongues to help them.
