Typical River Kingfishers

Typical river kingfishers are small, compact birds with large heads, sharp pointed bills, and short tails. Most have bright blue or green feathers on their upper bodies and orange or reddish-brown feathers underneath, although their colours can vary. These kingfishers are different from other types because they prefer freshwater habitats and catch their food by sitting on branches or rocks near the water before diving in to catch small fish and water insects. They live across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, in places like rivers, streams, lakes, and canals that have clear water and good spots to perch. They dig nesting holes in soft banks of earth close to the water. Their flight is fast and straight, flying low over the water. They make high-pitched calls, which help people recognise them even though they often stay hidden among plants by the water.
