Deer

family Cervidae

The deer family includes graceful plant-eating mammals known for their unique antlers, which are usually found on males and are shed every year. They range from small muntjacs to large elk, but all have slim bodies, long legs built for running fast, and a stomach with four parts to help digest plants. Their fur colour changes with the seasons and varies between species, often showing spots on young deer. Deer live in many different places across the Northern Hemisphere and have been introduced to other areas. They can be found in thick forests, moorlands, open grasslands, and tundra. In the UK, six species live here, including native roe and red deer, as well as introduced fallow, sika, muntjac, and Chinese water deer.
