Hares and Rabbits
family Leporidae
The Leporidae family includes hares and rabbits, which are different from other similar animals because they have long ears, strong back legs, and short fluffy tails. These animals range in size from small rabbits weighing less than one kilogram to large hares that can weigh more than five kilograms. They all move by hopping and have eyes set on the sides of their heads, giving them almost all-round vision. Leporids live on every continent except Antarctica. They can be found in many different places, from the cold Arctic tundra to warm tropical grasslands. They usually live in open areas like meadows, moorlands, farmland, and the edges of forests. However, some prefer thick bushes or rocky places. There are two main ways these animals raise their young. Hares have babies that are fairly well developed when born and make nests in shallow scrapes on the ground. Rabbits, on the other hand, have babies that are born very young and helpless, and they raise them in underground burrows. All members of this family eat plants. Their diet mainly consists of grasses, herbs, and tree bark.
