Razorbills
genus Alca
The genus Alca has only one living species, the Razorbill. This sturdy seabird is known for its unique deep, flattened bill with a vertical white line. The thick, blade-like bill is different from other seabirds and is where the bird gets its common name. This special bill shape helps the Razorbill catch fish and sand eels. Razorbills breed on rocky coasts and islands across the North Atlantic, with large groups found around Britain and Ireland. They make their nests on cliff ledges and in cracks, often near Guillemots but usually choosing more sheltered spots. When they are not breeding, Razorbills spread out over offshore waters, staying in northern seas. They dive underwater by flapping their wings to chase small fish in both coastal areas and open waters.
