Squirrels
family Sciuridae
The squirrel family includes a wide variety of rodents such as tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, and flying squirrels. They usually have strong back legs, sharp claws for climbing or digging, and large eyes that give them a wide field of vision. Most have bushy tails, but this can vary a lot between different groups. Their skulls have the typical rodent teeth, with front teeth that keep growing. They live on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. You can find them in many places, from tropical rainforests and arctic tundra to mountain meadows and suburban gardens. Different groups have adapted to living in trees, on the ground, or gliding through the air. Many squirrels store food and have an impressive ability to remember where they have hidden it. Their fur comes in a range of colours, including grey, brown, red, black, and some have striped patterns, depending on the species and where they live.
