Rodents
order Rodentia
Rodents are the most varied group of mammals, recognised by a single pair of constantly growing front teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. These teeth are sharp because the back surface lacks enamel, which causes them to wear down into a chisel-like edge through regular use. Rodents vary greatly in size, from tiny harvest mice to capybaras that weigh more than fifty kilogrammes. They live in many different environments, including on the ground, in trees, underground, and partly in water. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica, living in places such as tropical rainforests, arctic tundra, deserts, and wetlands. Most rodents eat plants or a mix of plants and meat, and their diet and habits differ a lot depending on the family they belong to. Socially, some rodents live alone while others form large colonies. Their ability to breed quickly and adapt to different conditions has helped many species thrive, although some remain specialised and vulnerable.
