Assassin Flies

family Asilidae

1species1photos

Assassin flies are strong, hunting flies known for their bristly look, large eyes, and a distinctive moustache of bristles on their face between the antennae and mouth. They vary greatly in size, ranging from small 5mm insects to large 50mm ones. Despite their size differences, they all use the same hunting method: sitting quietly and watching before quickly flying to catch other insects. They grab their prey with strong, spiny legs and pierce them with a short, tough mouthpart. They live in many different places around the world, including heathlands, grasslands, edges of woodlands, and coastal dunes in Britain. Assassin flies prefer open, sunny spots where they can warm themselves and hunt. Their young develop in soil or rotting wood, feeding on other small creatures. The adult flies are most active during the warm summer months and often return to the same favourite places while hunting.
