Small Eagles
genus Hieraaetus
The group Hieraaetus includes small, quick birds of prey that are between the size of buzzards and large eagles. They usually measure between 45 and 65 centimetres in length. These birds have relatively long wings and tails compared to their strong bodies, which helps them move very well when hunting. Their feathers can look quite different depending on the species, but most have dark colours on their backs and lighter colours underneath. Some have noticeable pale patches on their upper wings. These birds live in a variety of places across southern Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. They prefer open woodlands, areas with low bushes, and dry or semi-dry land. They hunt actively, catching prey like small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They often chase their prey in the air or dive down quickly from a perch. In the UK, birds from this group are very rare visitors, with only a few sightings from continental Europe.
