Old World Buntings are small to medium-sized songbirds with strong, cone-shaped beaks that are good for eating seeds. Most have brown feathers with streaks that help them blend into their surroundings. However, males often have bold head markings in black, white, chestnut, or yellow during the breeding season. The males and females look different, with females usually being duller in colour. These birds live in open or partly open areas across Europe, Asia, and Africa. They can be found in places like farmland, scrubland, reed beds, and hillsides. Many species that live in the north move south in winter to find warmer conditions. Old World Buntings mainly eat seeds and grains. During the breeding season, they also eat insects and other small creatures to provide extra nutrition. Their songs are usually simple but easy to recognise. They often sing from high spots where they can be seen. These birds spend most of their time on the ground. They usually build their nests low in plants or right on the ground.
