The Anatidae are a varied group of water birds found all over the world in freshwater and coastal areas. They have webbed feet, broad flat bills with comb-like edges used for filtering food, and thick waterproof feathers. Most types show clear differences between males and females in their feathers, especially during the breeding season. The family includes a wide range of sizes, from small ducks to large swans. Some species feed by dabbling in shallow water, others dive in deeper lakes, and some graze on land. Many birds from northern regions migrate long distances. Britain has a large number of these birds in winter, as well as some that stay and breed there. Their flight is usually strong and steady, often flying in V-shaped groups. All these birds rely on water for feeding and breeding, but they live in different places, from remote pools in the tundra to lakes in city parks.
