Long-tailed Tits
family Aegithalidae
The Long-tailed Tit family includes very small, social birds known for their extremely long tails, which are often longer than their bodies. These birds have round bodies, very short beaks, and soft, fluffy feathers that make them look like little balls. They are light, usually weighing between six and nine grams. They live across Europe and Asia, from Britain all the way to Japan. You can find them at the edges of woodlands, in hedges, bushes, and gardens. They build complex dome-shaped nests using moss, lichen, and spider silk, and line them with thousands of feathers for warmth and comfort. These birds move quickly and restlessly, bouncing from branch to branch. They make constant high-pitched calls to stay in touch with others in their group. Unlike true tits, they have unique facial markings and do not have strong beaks for breaking seeds. One interesting behaviour is their cooperative breeding. If some birds fail to raise their own young, they help relatives with their nests instead.
