Larks
family Alaudidae
Larks are small to medium-sized songbirds that live mainly on the ground. Their brown, buff, and streaked feathers help them blend in well with open areas. Most larks have long back claws and fairly long wings. They are famous for their complex songs, which they often sing while flying high above their territory. Larks can be found in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, with one species reaching the Americas. They prefer open places like grasslands, steppes, semi-deserts, and farmland. Larks spend most of their time on the ground, walking rather than hopping, and usually make their nests in shallow holes in the ground. In the UK, the Skylark is the most common lark and lives across much of the country. The Woodlark is found in fewer places, while Shore Larks visit coastal areas occasionally in winter but are quite rare.
