Description

The Eurasian Collared-Dove is a medium-sized dove with pale grey-brown feathers and a narrow black half-collar on the back of its neck, edged with white. Its underparts are lighter in colour, and its flight feathers are darker, which can be seen when it is flying. The tail is square-shaped and shows a white band at the end and a dark base when spread out. The eye is dark red with a thin pale ring around it. Originally, this bird lived in Asia and southeastern Europe. During the twentieth century, it spread widely across Europe, reaching Britain in the 1950s. Today, it is a common bird in many parts of the continent. It does well in areas changed by people, such as suburban gardens, parks, farmyards, and places near grain stores. Its call is a steady three-part coo, often heard as "coo-COO-coo". The dove repeats this call many times from high spots like TV aerials and rooftops.
