Pigeons and Doves
order Columbiformes
Members of this group are known for their small heads, round bodies, and a special way of drinking water. Instead of scooping water like other birds, they suck it up. They have a soft, fleshy area at the base of their beak and produce a special milk from their crop to feed their young, something only a few other birds do. Their flight is usually quick and straight, powered by strong wing muscles. They come in many sizes, from as small as sparrows to as large as turkeys. Their feathers vary a lot, from plain greys and browns to bright, shiny colours. These birds live on every continent except Antarctica. They can be found in many places, including thick forests, dry deserts, and cities. Many species tend to stay in the same area and have complex social habits.
