Pigeons and Doves
family Columbidae
Pigeons and doves are a unique group of birds with plump bodies, small heads, short necks, and a distinctive nodding walk. They all share the special ability to drink by sucking up water rather than tilting their heads back, and they produce a nutritious substance called crop milk to feed their young. Their feathers range from plain greys and browns to shiny greens and purples, often with striking patterns. Their soft cooing sounds are typical of the whole group. They live in places ranging from thick forests to dry deserts and busy towns. Most pigeons and doves are strong, fast fliers with pointed wings. They mainly eat seeds, fruits, and plant material found on the ground or in plants. Many species have adapted very well to areas changed by people, becoming some of the most common birds seen in towns and cities around the world.
