Coreus species are medium to large bugs that look like twigs. They are usually brownish with long bodies and fairly long antennae. They can be told apart from similar bugs because their bodies don’t have very noticeable side extensions and their colour is more even. Their antennae have four parts, with the last parts often a bit thicker. These bugs are commonly found in grasslands, hedgerows, and the edges of woodlands across the British Isles. Some types prefer certain places more than others. They feed on the seeds and developing fruits of different plants, especially docks and sorrels. Adult bugs are most often seen from late spring to autumn. When they are disturbed, they give off a distinctive smell to defend themselves. The young bugs, called nymphs, look like the adults but do not have fully grown wings. Their colour can change quite a bit as they grow.
