Twigwilters

family Coreidae

1species1photos

Twigwilters are strong, medium to large true bugs with broad, flat bodies and noticeably large back legs. Most of them are brown or grey, which helps them blend in well with tree bark and dry plants. Their name comes from the way they cause young plant shoots to wilt by feeding on them. They have well-developed scent glands that release a strong smell when they feel threatened, which helps protect them from predators. They are found in temperate and tropical areas all over the world, with several types living in southern Britain. They can be seen in gardens, hedgerows, woodland edges, and farmland. Both adults and young bugs feed on plant sap by piercing the plants with their mouthparts. Many twigwilters prefer certain types of plants, often those related to peas and cabbages.
