Typical Falcons
genus Falco
Typical falcons represent the core members of the falcon family, distinguished from caracaras by their streamlined, aerial hunting lifestyle. These birds exhibit pointed wings, relatively long tails, and powerful, direct flight. Most species show dark eyes and a characteristic facial pattern with a moustachial stripe. Size varies considerably across the genus, from the diminutive merlins to the robust gyr falcons. Found on every continent except Antarctica, typical falcons occupy diverse habitats from arctic tundra to tropical forests, though many favour open country. They are active predators, taking prey primarily on the wing through spectacular high-speed stoops or agile pursuit. Most species nest on cliff ledges or commandeer old stick nests of other birds, rarely building their own structures.
