Finches, Euphonias, and Allies

family Fringillidae

9species17photos

The Fringillidae are small to medium-sized songbirds with strong, cone-shaped bills that are good for eating seeds. However, the shape of their bills can vary a lot within the group, from thick and strong to more delicate and pointed. Most of these birds show clear differences between males and females, with males having brighter feathers. Their colours range widely, from plain browns and greys to bright yellows, reds, and blues. These birds live across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. They can be found in many different places, such as woodlands, grasslands, scrub areas, and mountainous regions. Many species from northern areas migrate or move around depending on where food is available. They usually eat seeds, buds, and sometimes insects. Outside the breeding season, they often search for food in mixed flocks. Their cheerful, twittering songs and wave-like flying patterns make them easy to spot.
