Eurasian Goldfinches and Citril Finches
genus Carduelis
Members of the genus Carduelis are small, lively finches known for their bright yellow patches on their wings and their relatively pointed beaks, which are well suited for getting seeds from thistles and other similar flowers. These birds have a distinctive wavy flight pattern and often move in small groups outside the breeding season. They make clear, tinkling calls that help people recognise them. The genus includes the widespread Eurasian Goldfinch, which can be found across Britain and much of Europe in open woodland, gardens, and farmland with hedges. There is also the more local Citril Finch, which lives in alpine and subalpine coniferous forests and meadows in the mountains of southwestern Europe. Both species show differences between males and females in their feather colours, but these differences are subtle and need careful watching to tell them apart in the wild.
